United States Government Housing Grants

Housing Grants from the United States Government

The idea that the federal government has lots of cash just waiting to be given away in the form of housing grants and many other free grants is common. In fact, many Americans actually believe this. This is partly due to late night infomercials and daytime commercials that advertise books that will show every American how to get a piece of the federal pie through free grants. Housing grants are just one of the advertised grants available that will allow individuals to get in the home of their dreams. The problem, however, is that the federal government does not give out housing grants to just anyone. In fact, free money for housing is only issued to individuals and agencies that meet strict requirements. Some advertisements mislead people to believe that any American can get housing grants to build the home of their dreams. This is misleading and simply not the case. Nevertheless, there are billions of grant dollars available for housing for low-income families, Indians and native Hawaiians, as well as other special groups.

The Supportive Housing Program

One grant program for housing is the Supportive Housing Program. This program gives grants to help homeless individuals find housing and support services that will allow them to live independently. Applicants for these grants include government entities, private non-profits, local governments, as well as States. Local Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offices can provide more information on the grants issued by the Supportive Housing Program. One important issue to know is that the housing grants are issued annually during a national competition. Therefore, getting these types of grants is certainly not easy and requires a lot of hard work and effort. Those who receive the grants must meet certain requirements set forth by the grants in order to maintain the free money to help those in need of housing. Progress reports and annual records are also required.

Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers

Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers is another form of housing grant issued by the federal government. The purpose of this grant program is to help families with very low incomes to find safe rental housing that is clean and respectable. Housing grants of this nature work hard to help those with little income to afford rent. These grants allow low-income families the opportunity to choose housing that is affordable and decent. The housing payments are calculated based on the local standard and the family’s adjusted income at 30%. Only public housing agencies are allowed to apply for these types of grants. These include any public body or government entity that is involved in the development of housing for those families with very low incomes.

There are several other housing grants available, but they are all very specific in how they may be administered. While there are billions of dollars available for housing grants, the money is used to help those truly in need. Housing grants are not available to help American citizens move to a more expensive home in a country club or to add an extra wing their home simply because they do not want to pay for the expense themselves. Government housing grants are designed to help those in need and are only issued when stringent prerequisites have been met.

Small Business Government Grants

Government Grants for Small Businesses

Everyone starting a small business would love to receive several government grants and never have to worry about cash flow, start up costs, and all the typical financial stresses associated with a new small business. However, the fact of the matter is that federal government grants for small businesses should not be the focus. Instead, owners of a small business should look to their local state government for financial help.

Most states do offer government grants for small businesses, but the Small Business Association (SBA) does not give small business grants for startup or expansion. Instead, the grants issued by the SBA are most often given to state and local governments, non-profit organizations, and even lending institutions to increase financial support and technical assistance to small businesses.

Small businesses looking for government grants should really turn to their local SBA office for help first. Doing this will allow small business owners to find information can on how to get their small business off the ground and the help that is available. The SBA offices, located nationally, are there to assist with training, financing, planning, and more. Entrepreneurs are encouraged to take advantage of these services.

In addition, while the United States government does not give out government grants for small businesses, the government is interested in seeing small businesses succeed. This is because more than 50 percent of the nation’s workforce is employed by small businesses. The majority of new jobs are offered by small businesses not to mention that more than half of the gross domestic product is generated by small businesses. Because of these very important reasons, the US government has a special interest in the success of small businesses. Moreover, this is why the SBA is in existence and why it is so intent on helping small businesses to thrive.

If you were previously interested in government grants for your small business then you may wonder if the SBA can help your business. There are some general requirements that must be considered before the SBA can help, such as business size, if it is independently owned, as well as whether or not the business is dominant in its market. If all of these elements are met then the SBA can offer plenty of help.

You may want to utilize the Small Business Association’s help with your business plan especially if you are hoping to get a loan or any other kind of financing for your small business. This is because all banks and investors are interested in seeing a business plan before investing or approving a loan. If you do not have a business plan and would like help, then seek out your local SBA branch. Those who do have a business plan in place, but are in need of additional help are encouraged to turn to there local SBA branch as well. Assistance and counseling with your business plan is available free of charge. After your business plan is prepared, you will be equipped to obtain a bank loan or to approach investors about investing in your small business. The federal government may not be handing out government grants for small businesses but they do provide plenty of help with low interest SBA loans and information on how to start a small business. Federal loans from the SBA as well as other help are provided from the federal government free of charge.

Government Grants for Educators

Government grants can help to improve our children’s education. The federal government has made it a priority to contribute funds to the American educational system. If you are an educator, working in an impoverished school district, you may be entitled to government funds to help you to achieve success in your classroom. Many educators desire to go that extra mile to provide materials and other resources to encourage learning in the classroom. Unfortunately, most educators do not have the funds to do so. If you are an educator that is looking for a way to make a difference in your school and community, you may consider writing a government grant proposal for educational purposes.

If you are unsure of where to start, here are the steps that you might take in order to write a government grant proposal for your classroom or school. You must first identify the need for the grant. Next, get permission from your principal or department leader to apply for the government grant. Then, conduct research to find possible funders for your proposal. Next, organize a team to help write the proposal. Finally, submit your grant proposal as early in the year as possible.

Here are a few ideas for government grant proposals for the educational setting:

q In today’s society, technology is a growing industry. There is no way around it. It is very important that students be exposed to computer technology on a regular basis. If you are in need of more computers in your classroom, it is to your advantage to apply for a government grant that will supply more computers for your students. There are companies such as Dell and Hewlett Packard that participate in supporting educational institutions in this area.
q Many educators have found that upon graduation, students lack certain life skills that are important in order to function successfully in today’s society. Some of these skills include time-management, money-management, work ethics, study skills, and family skills. Many of these skills are later developed through trial and error or they are not developed at all. As an educator, you may want to propose a Life Skills Program to help students develop the skills necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
q Tutoring is a wonderful way to help students that struggle in a particular subject area. Although many students are in need of private tutoring, they often relinquish the opportunity because they cannot afford to hire a private tutor. A government grant can help provide a free tutoring program for low-income families.
q Summer enrichment programs are not only beneficial to students, but to parents as well. Many parents find it difficult to afford childcare for their children during the summer months. Developing a formal summer enrichment program that focuses on continuing the learning process may help to improve student achievement in the upcoming school year.
q Many American schools are failing due to poor test scores. Setting up a program to help improve students’ test taking skills would be helpful to low achieving schools.

Writing a grant proposal for your school is a wonderful way to make a difference in your community. It is up to educators to ensure that students are getting a quality education. With the help of government grants and other educational resources, students have the opportunity to gain wonderful learning experiences.

Free Money for Retirement

Does the Government Give Out Free Money for Retirement as Lesko Claims?

There is a book written by government grant Guru, Matthew Lesko, titled “Free Money for your Retirement.” Lesko also has a website that is marketed directly to senior citizens for a subscription fee, which entitles the elderly to find over $890 million worth of retirement benefits. However, is this information true? Is the federal government handing out funds to the nation’s retired individuals to make their golden days more financially sound?

Lesko asserts that seniors can find the retirement funds that they need. In order to do so, they must pay a small subscription fee to access his site. His website excites the emotion of hope for seniors who have few retirement benefits to rely on and are looking for ways to increase their income. However, seniors cannot view the website without subscribing to it. Therefore, the advertisement for a retirement of a lifetime is enough to make any senior citizen wonder what they are missing! The site offers to give information on retirement programs for individuals over the age of 40, who make less than $150,000. Services, gifts, grants, loans, and even professional advice are advertised on the entrance page of the website to entice seniors to pay the subscription fee to access the information. Lesko receives $14.95 per month from seniors hoping to find this continually updated information as well as a $29.95 initiation fee. That is a lot of money for information the federal government publishes free of charge. Not to mention, seniors on a tight budget would be better off paying bills with the money.

That is because the majority of the “free” money is really entitlement programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and even food stamps. Most seniors already know of these programs before they buy Lesko’s books or subscribe to his website. So, what are seniors receiving from Lesko when they buy his books or subscribe to his website? Lesko is not selling senior citizens anything that they cannot find on their own. Many elderly people do not have internet access, which makes it difficult for them to research the World Wide Web for grant information. On the brighter side, Lesko does provide the information in a well laid out format and he does do the research so seniors do not have to. Some question whether he is providing a real product or just false hope. Others say that he exaggerates the government grants available and misleads individuals into thinking the government will assist them with retirement with cold hard cash when really the government can assist them through Medicare, Medicaid, and food stamps.

The website marketed to senior citizens may not be a Scam so to speak, but it more than likely includes very similar information that his books do. In fact, Lesko does not exactly write new information, but rather, he cut and pastes old information from other books and new government grant information. Seniors certainly would love to know about a way to get the government to finance their retirement especially after cuts in Social Security and the rising cost of living. However, seniors would be better off taking their money and invest it in a money market account or simply pay a few bills than they would be to spend it on one of Matthew Lesko’s books or a subscription to the senior retirement website.
