Housing Grants from the United States Government
The idea that the federal government has lots of cash just waiting to be given away in the form of housing grants and many other free grants is common. In fact, many Americans actually believe this. This is partly due to late night infomercials and daytime commercials that advertise books that will show every American how to get a piece of the federal pie through free grants. Housing grants are just one of the advertised grants available that will allow individuals to get in the home of their dreams. The problem, however, is that the federal government does not give out housing grants to just anyone. In fact, free money for housing is only issued to individuals and agencies that meet strict requirements. Some advertisements mislead people to believe that any American can get housing grants to build the home of their dreams. This is misleading and simply not the case. Nevertheless, there are billions of grant dollars available for housing for low-income families, Indians and native Hawaiians, as well as other special groups.
The Supportive Housing Program
One grant program for housing is the Supportive Housing Program. This program gives grants to help homeless individuals find housing and support services that will allow them to live independently. Applicants for these grants include government entities, private non-profits, local governments, as well as States. Local Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offices can provide more information on the grants issued by the Supportive Housing Program. One important issue to know is that the housing grants are issued annually during a national competition. Therefore, getting these types of grants is certainly not easy and requires a lot of hard work and effort. Those who receive the grants must meet certain requirements set forth by the grants in order to maintain the free money to help those in need of housing. Progress reports and annual records are also required.
Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers
Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers is another form of housing grant issued by the federal government. The purpose of this grant program is to help families with very low incomes to find safe rental housing that is clean and respectable. Housing grants of this nature work hard to help those with little income to afford rent. These grants allow low-income families the opportunity to choose housing that is affordable and decent. The housing payments are calculated based on the local standard and the family’s adjusted income at 30%. Only public housing agencies are allowed to apply for these types of grants. These include any public body or government entity that is involved in the development of housing for those families with very low incomes.
There are several other housing grants available, but they are all very specific in how they may be administered. While there are billions of dollars available for housing grants, the money is used to help those truly in need. Housing grants are not available to help American citizens move to a more expensive home in a country club or to add an extra wing their home simply because they do not want to pay for the expense themselves. Government housing grants are designed to help those in need and are only issued when stringent prerequisites have been met.
